The Cost of Survival Mode: Why Do We Stop Feeling?

Traumatized individuals are, in a sense, trapped in the worst of both worlds. At one moment, they drown beneath overwhelming waves of terror, uncontrollable rage, and deep shame; in the next, they completely “shut down,” disconnecting from all emotional and instinctive anchors. This disconnection deprives them not only of pain but also of purpose, joy, and the ability to navigate life. These individuals may be our clients, relatives, or even ourselves—people forever swinging between emotional storms and a coma-like numbness (hypoarousal), trapped at both extremes. In this state, we all become versions of the famous “Phineas Gage” under chronic stress or severe trauma. Gage, one of the most well-known cases in neuroscience history, survived after an iron rod pierced his prefrontal cortex, yet the kind, organized, and social man he once was disappeared completely. Trauma functions much like that iron rod: it disables the “human” and “rational” parts of the brain, reducing us to primitive beings focused solely on survival. One of the most devastating consequences of this process is the loss of the ability to form social bonds through emotional intelligence.

An Evolutionary Legacy: The Freeze Response

The freeze response experienced during trauma is not, contrary to common belief, a loss of willpower. Rather, it is one of our most ancient survival strategies, rooted in millions of years of evolution. Modern neuroscience confirms that when the “fight or flight” mechanism becomes insufficient in moments of intense fear, the brain automatically shifts into a state known as “tonic immobility.” During this process, even if the individual feels a powerful urge to escape internally, the body and mind enter a temporary state of paralysis, shutting down in response to environmental stimuli. This “cognitive and physical lock-up” evolved as a biological shield—either to avoid attracting a predator’s attention or to minimize physical pain during an unavoidable attack. Especially in individuals with high anxiety sensitivity, this response becomes more pronounced, demonstrating that trauma is not merely a memory but a deeply biological survival mechanism embedded within the nervous system. This silent scream is the organism’s attempt to survive by “playing dead.”

The Breakdown of Social Bonds: An Invisible Wall

Emotional numbness affects not only the individual’s inner world but also their connection with others. A person may feel absent even while sitting beside loved ones. This condition resembles a temporary paralysis of empathy. Although being unable to share in another person’s joy or pain often produces intense guilt, the biological defense system does not allow emotional access. The warmth and closeness required for human relationships may even feel threatening to a frozen nervous system. As a result, traumatized individuals unconsciously build invisible walls between themselves and the people they love in order to preserve a sense of safety. While this isolation may begin as a survival strategy, over time it transforms into a prison of profound emotional loneliness.

A Neurobiological Perspective: The Balance Between the Amygdala and the Prefrontal Cortex

This process within the brain is shaped by the struggle between the centers of logic and fear:
• The Logic Center (Prefrontal Cortex): During traumatic events, it attempts to silence the overloaded fear center by initiating a kind of “shutdown.”

• The Fear Center (Amygdala): Under normal conditions, it works in communication with the logic center. However, when trauma becomes chronic, the prefrontal cortex suppresses the limbic system so intensely that the individual becomes unable to feel any emotions.
• fMRI Findings: Brain imaging studies show excessive activity in the logical regions of the brain and near silence in emotional centers among individuals experiencing emotional numbness.

The Disconnection of Communication: The Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC)

The ACC acts as a central translator that converts emotions into “felt experiences.” It functions through several mechanisms:
• Emotional Decision-Making: It determines whether an event emotionally affects us. When ACC activity decreases in emotionally numb individuals, it feels as though the television image remains, but the sound has been muted—events occur, yet they create no internal resonance.
• Natural Painkillers: The body produces endogenous opioids to cope with physical pain. Since the brain does not clearly distinguish emotional pain from physical pain, trauma triggers an intense “opioid release” that numbs the mind.
• Dissociation: This process creates sensations such as “watching life from behind glass” or feeling detached from one’s own body. In reality, this is the brain’s attempt to keep us alive.

Melting the Ice: From Emotional Numbness to Emotional Vitality

Trauma may leave lasting scars because it activates preexisting psychological vulnerabilities within the individual. As described in the book Waking the Tiger, the reactions that could not be completed during trauma remain trapped within the nervous system as “frozen survival energy.” Several approaches may help release this energy:
1. Exercise and Physical Activity: Reactivates frozen muscular responses and burns stress hormones such as cortisol.
2. Cold Showers: Stimulate the vagus nerve, “resetting” the nervous system and redirecting attention toward bodily sensations.
3. Therapy (EMDR / Somatic Experiencing): Helps process traumatic memories within a safe framework, reducing their emotional burden.
4. Somatic Release: Trembling, crying, or deep breathing may discharge stored survival energy, erase old “danger” signals within the nervous system, and return the body to a state of safety.
